Behavior Plan
Learning how to behave in a school setting is a big part of the Kindergarten year. I use a classroom behavior plan to help students learn to follow school rules and reward positive behavior. I want students to value good behavior but also understand that we can learn from our mistakes! J
Gold Tags:
Students will earn Gold Tags for good behavior, great choices, a positive attitude, kind words, participation, etc. to be used towards reward coupons which include the prize box, sitting with a friend, sitting with the teacher, wearing a cool hat, etc.
Students learn very quickly that earning gold tags has its rewards. Students are motivated to earn as many as they can. I want it to become less about the prizes and more about becoming the best citizen that they can be. Students strive to earn more than they did the previous week.
Parents often ask how many gold tags their child should be earning daily/weekly. The number is actually not that important. I believe in always looking for the positive. However, you will receive a weekly certificate, which will tell you exactly how many gold tags your child earned. Their individual behavior calendar will show any specific behaviors that he/she can work on the following week. I ask that the behavior calendar be signed each week.
I love the tone of the classroom with positive language and rewards set, however, there are times when poor behavior also needs to be addressed. Below is how we help monitor our negative behavior choices.
Chart from Top to bottom.
Our classroom behavior plan works very well for those everyday manners and rules we are learning. I will notify families how their child’s behavior is everyday with the use of a behavior calendar. If your child has to clip down, I will mark his/her chart with the behavior they displayed that day and they will color the day with the color they ending the day on. I would like for you to sign and return at the end of each week.
Children are going to make mistakes. That’s how they learn. Please expect that your child will remove his/her clip on occasion or even bring a note or two home, especially in the beginning of the year. Unless your child gets a note home, his/her behavior was not a constant problem and I do not suggest punishment at home unless a note is received. I recommend setting up a consequence ahead of time, such as loss of television or a favorite toy for the evening so your child will know what to expect if they bring a behavior note home. If I am concerned about your child’s behavior at school or feel it is affecting his or her success in the classroom, I will call and discuss my concerns with you.
It is still normal at this age for children to act inappropriately when they are angry; however Cowan has a zero tolerance policy for any threats of harm or actual harm made to another student. There have been incidents when young students have used threatening language resulting in suspension. So please be sure to talk about inappropriate words for school and to also see a teacher for help. If a student hits/hurts another student, he/she will automatically clip down and miss all of recess and receive a note home. I take hurting another student very seriously as does the school. We do not accept this behavior.

- Each student on green on the clip chart. (Cool Cat)
- If a child makes a poor choice, they will get one verbal warning.
- If a child makes another poor choice, they will move their clip to yellow ( Are you worried) and the student will miss 1 minute of recess.
- If a child makes third poor choice, they will move their clip to orange (Skating on a thin line) and the student will miss 3 minutes of recess.
- If a child makes a fourth poor choice, they will move their clip down to Red (Goodness No) and the student will miss 5 minutes of recess.
- If the child misbehaves after this, a note will be sent home informing you about the poor choices your child has made. This note will need to be signed and returned the next school day. The student will also miss all of their recess.
- After all of this, if the student is still making poor choices, then a trip to Mr. Brown will take place.
